@rolfkleef Yes, that's my worry too. Gaping holes in conversation webs over time. Could there be a federated kind of archival infrastructure as well? Including permalinks that would remain constant even if servers hosting archived posts change?

@ademoor there is archive.org doing their best; and many conversations are ephemeral in nature — I know there is research trying to deduce ancient songs by detecting sound waves frozen in pottery and plaster.

But that only captures the songs of people working in those fields. And conversely: do I want every conversation online to be eternal rather than ephemeral?
