@jai I certainly agree there is room for multiple instances, and thanks @david_megginson @robert for adding more info on mstdn.ca (and its CIRA partnership).
In The Netherlands (and EU) we have some interesting attempts to root Fediverse instances in existing public institutions (provincial or national governments, public broadcasting, universities).
The big challenge is moving from "someone's project" to "sustainable public service"…
