  • @jamesbelchamber @mgifford the 2024-2025 calendar says exams should end Friday Feb 1st, and the next semester starts Mon Feb 10th, so still a bit up for grabs perhaps? In 2024 it was the weekend at the end of exams (would be Feb 2+3 2025); and usually it's the first weekend of Feb, but I've also been there around Feb 24th (ok, that was 2008…archive.fosdem.org/2008/) — and in 2016 it was the last weekend of January 🙂 vub.be/en/about-vub/key-data-v

I also see a connection with the story about German activists trying to stop a coal mine from destroying local villages. Both are about people whose homes are threatened by climate change.

But only one group is able to physically fight the cause of it, and they know full well they're fighting for not only their own homes but also for people like these in Fiji worldpressphoto.org/collection

@andrew Back in the '90s, I was part of a grassroots facilitators collective. We had a meeting in Libkovice, a village completely destroyed for a brown coal mine. Very weird to walk around streets: no houses, but apple and pear trees in gardens still with their fruits…

We stayed with the former mayor, Stanislav Břicháček, in the only house left. We made him an honorary member.

Libkovice existed for 812 years. Amsterdam celebrates its 750th anniversary next year…

  • The double-edged sword called Large Language Models: what until now was labour-intensive work becomes automated and scalable. It could help us with deliberations on societal problems, but it definitely also opens the door to mass spying for even more "personalised ads" (and more dystopia)…
